Ultimately that’s pointless too, for the Sun will expand into a red giant and destroy the biosphere completely about five billion years from now. I don’t think it’s any use looking for ultimate pointfulness; meaning arises on various scales and has to be addressed where it arises, and we do lots of locally pointless things in pursuit of slightly larger goals. But if we are not to be merely the slaves of duty, we must arrive in the end at things that are just fun, that are truly their own reward.
