Note that you can, of course, always write something like *[ local-name() = 'foo' and namespace-uri() = '' ] to match elements in no namespace, regardless of whether the null prefix is bound to a namespace or not in the XPath. Of course, that’s so longwinded and reader-hostile that it’s rarely worth doing…
