I second the Faber/Mazlish recommendation, though I would add that some of the techniques will not work if your child has ADHD. (Found that out the hard way, I did.)
Of course there’s also Penelope Leach’s good old standby Your Baby And Child, even if she is a Brit and has you calling the doctor rather more often than we Yanks can generally afford.
