Re: Decision making

Hiya Jenny,

I too went against the advice of your Dad a couple of months ago, and got an Mac. I haven’t looked back! =)

  • TextMate is brilliant, and the main reason I got a mac.
  • iWork is great too, although I was a little under-whelmed by Numbers - there is no facility to add a regression line being my principle niggle. Pages is great though, and Keynote provides hours of entertainment! =P
  • Macports comes in handy too.
  • Adium is a great iChat replacement, that works with googletalk, msn, aol etc. No video/audio though.
  • I’m personally not too hopeful of getting Time Machine running on other Network drives, especially now that Apple has released their Time Capsule. It is technically possible, but I’m a little wary of it, as it was seemingly disabled for some reason before Leopard shipped. In the terminal:

    defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
  • Might not be of interest, but Handbrake is a great tool for video conversion. IIRC, there is also some software, Mac The Ripper, that juts rips the films to HD. VLC Media Player is worth having too, to supplement QuickTime Player.
