A Creole by any other name...

Argh. I’ve been contacted by the guys at WikiCreole who want me to change the name of Creole. What should I do? Not only is “Creole” a great name for a schema language that deals with concurrent markup, but it’s a great acronym too (Composable regular expressions for overlapping languages etc.)

I did Google when I first came up with the name in August 2006, but didn’t discover WikiCreole (unsurprisingly, since it was only coined in July 2006 itself). But now far more many people know, care about and use WikiCreole than Creole grammars. So any suggestions for alternative names?

Where's the problem?

What Rick said. Google currently offers two tech hits ahead of WikiCreole anyhow (database abstraction layer for PHP5/Plug-in for Eclipse).

Keep it

Its a different subject area, I don’t see scope for confusion, and people can use WikiCreole when there is need for disambiguation. Why not just keep it?

That name reminds me of a

That name reminds me of a brand of chips we had in South Africa in the late 80's called "Kreols", most noted because although they tasted good, they smelled like fish. Perhaps a good incentive to change the name.

I was going to suggest pidgin but that (according to wikipedia) is already taken (as a result of the kind of legal hassle over names that you want to avoid:-) wikipedia again suggests creole already has software meanings (a php module) so adding another one isn’t so bad…

would they be happy with CreoleNG the trailing NG helps to distinguish from the rather more generic “creole” name and is of course a nod to one of the motivating languages?

after the best part of 20 years being associated to the latex typesetting system, I’d recommend avoiding using any name that suggests that your system might be related to unorthodox private behaviour:-)
